What is the Permanent Products philosophy?

The short version

This website is dedicated to environmentally friendly, extremely durable goods.

The medium length version

Our short term goal is to promote existing products which we feel are worthy, as a way of educating the public about the current availability of environmentally responsible and durable merchandise. In the long run, we would like to design, manufacture, and market our own brand of Permanent Products.

The long, off-topic, rambling and disorganized version

We believe that responsible materialism is the smart solution to some of our biggest societal and economic problems. We are pro science and technology and anti useless waste. We enjoy buying products which we know will have a long lifetime. The posessions we value the greatest today tend to be the well made objects of the past - we want to pass that feeling on to our grandchildren to the nth degree.

Our Endorsements Page shows some products currently available elsewhere which approach the ideals held by Permanent Products. In addition to consumer items of this type, we recommend that all so-called durable goods be held to high standards of quality and durability.

Perhaps the social cost of the goods we buy or create should be factored into the purchase price. We are charged huge taxes for buying cigarettes, so why not the same for styrofoam cups and disposable cameras?

Roads and highways should be built for extreme longevity, with all utilities accessible without breaking the pavement. Houses and apartments should no longer be built like matchboxes. We should invest in high-speed trains like we mean it. Every scrap of garbage we produce should be recyclable, and should be sorted for reuse. We should aggressively pursue fusion power, or alternative methods of clean energy generation.

The list of goals shown above is a lot to do for one person. Are we in for a brilliant future, or will the earth turn into a toxic swamp? I don't know, but you can make a difference. The next time you buy a chair, or a cup, a lamp, or a house, do the right thing. Buy a product which is strong and durable and you will not only ensure that another cup or table will not need to be made, you will encourage other cups and tables to be made better too. This is an easy change to make which will help the world while improving your satisfaction you have with your purchases.
